One of the deadliest floods in Southern California history nearly wiped out parts of Orange County, yet it ended up shaping the county we know today.

In March of 1938 days of nonstop rain turned the Santa Ana River into a force that nobody was prepared for. Bridges collapsed, homes were carried away, and more than fifty people were killed across the region. Cities like Anaheim, Orange, and Santa Ana were swallowed by water.

After the disaster the United States Army Corps of Engineers built Prado Dam which completely changed how water moves through the center of Orange County.

That flood control system made it possible for thousands of homes and entire communities to rise safely in areas that were once floodplains. It played a huge role in how places like Anaheim Hills and Yorba Linda developed and grew.

A disaster that destroyed homes ended up creating the foundation for thousands more.

Before John Wayne Airport became one of Orange County’s busiest hubs, it was literally a bean field.

In the 1920s, aviation pioneer Eddie Martin carved a tiny dirt airstrip into farmland just south of Santa Ana — nothing but beans, barley, and a dream of flight. The county eventually took it over, expanded it, and in 1979 renamed it after John Wayne, the Western film legend who called Newport Beach home.

Before Disneyland became the icon of Orange County, there was another magical place that has mostly slipped into legend.

In 1967, just a few blocks from Knott’s Berry Farm, local businessman Allen Parkinson opened the Japanese Village and Deer Park on a sprawling 32 acre property in Buena Park. Inspired by Nara Park in Japan, families wandered through quiet gardens, paused by koi ponds, and even watched dolphins and bears perform in the Sea Theater. But the heart of the park was unforgettable. More than 300 gentle deer roamed freely, nudging visitors for the special treats sold at the gates.

For a few years it was one of the most peaceful, unique attractions in all of Southern California. But when the park was sold to Six Flags in 1970, the experience began to shift. Attendance dropped, costs climbed, and by the mid 1970s the story took a heartbreaking turn. A suspected tuberculosis outbreak led to nearly 200 deer being euthanized, sparking controversy and leaving a shadow over the park’s future. In 1975 the gates closed for good, and what was once a serene sanctuary faded into memory.

Today, the land off Knott Avenue is filled with quiet office buildings and warehouses. If you drive by, you would never guess that families once fed deer, sipped tea by peaceful ponds, and stepped into a world inspired by Japan.

From tranquil deer to modern day theme parks, Buena Park reinvented itself almost overnight. It is a reminder of how quickly Orange County’s story can change.

Most people watching boats off the OC coastline have no idea that Orange County once had full blown casinos floating just offshore.

In the 1920s and 1930s, gambling was completely illegal on land in California, but there was one big loophole. If you anchored a ship just outside the three mile limit, state law could not touch you. So a handful of operators turned old steamships into glamorous floating casinos. The SS Johanna Smith and the Rex became two of the most famous, drawing thrill seekers from Newport and Seal Beach who boarded water taxis at night to play blackjack, spin slot machines, drink champagne, and escape the rules onshore.

These ships were packed with music, card rooms, bright lights, and everything you would expect from an early version of Vegas. People from all over Southern California showed up for the adventure. But the run did not last forever. By 1939, state officials decided they had seen enough and launched a dramatic raid on the Rex that officially ended the era of offshore gambling along the OC coast. After that, the floating casinos faded away, leaving behind nothing but old photos, wild stories, and a piece of history most locals never hear about.

Most people have no idea that the oldest living thing in Orange County is tucked inside Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea.

Most people have explored Newport’s Back Bay without realizing an entire island once sat right in the middle of it.

But a century ago, this place had a completely different reputation. In the 1910s and 1920s, Seal Beach was the county’s beachfront amusement hotspot. The Joy Zone opened in 1916 with a roller coaster, a dance hall, and a glowing electric pier that pulled people in from all over Southern California.

Then Prohibition hit, and everything changed. With light police presence and its location right on the county line, Seal Beach became a magnet for rum running, gambling, and even floating casinos anchored just offshore. People started calling it Orange County’s own Sin City. Locals at the time swore it was nothing like Chicago and said most operators were surprisingly friendly and supportive of the community, but the reputation stuck.

When Disneyland launched in October 1955, Walt Disney had poured every dollar he had into the park and didn’t have the funding to build a hotel for guests. That is when oil tycoon Jack Wrather stepped in. He signed an agreement to build and operate the Disneyland Hotel and secured the rights to the Disneyland name for hotels across California until the year 2054. Wrather and his wife, actress Bonita Granville, ran the hotel for years as an independent operation and it became one of the most iconic pieces of the Disneyland experience. The wild part is that Disney did not own it until 1988 when they finally bought it back, more than thirty years after it opened.

So that famous Disneyland courtyard you grew up walking through was actually imagined by someone outside the Disney company long before Disney took control.

Most people don’t realize one earthquake in Southern California completely changed the way every school in the state is built and the epicenter of that change was right here in Long Beach

On March 10, 1933, a 6.4-magnitude quake ripped through the region, leveling dozens of school buildings, causing $50 million in damage, and taking 115 lives, many of them students. The devastation was so severe that it exposed a terrifying truth: California’s schools weren’t designed to survive the earthquakes we all live with.

But what happened next reshaped history. Just 30 days after the disaster, Governor James Rolph signed the Field Act, a landmark law requiring strict seismic standards for every new public school. It wasn’t just about building stronger walls; it required licensed engineers, independent plan reviews, better materials, and earthquake-resistant designs long before most of the country even considered them. And it didn’t take long for the new rules to be tested. When the 1940 Imperial Valley earthquake struck, Field-Act schools stood strong with minimal damage, while older buildings around them crumbled.

Since 1933, the Field Act has quietly protected millions of students, and here’s the mind-blowing part: not a single school built under Field Act standards has ever collapsed or caused casualties in an earthquake. That’s nearly a century of proof that one tragedy transformed safety for every generation that followed.
